The Bible makes it clear that there are blessings and there are curses. When blessings are at play, favor and goodness characterize things. However, repeated disaster and failure are evident when a curse is present. Every Christian wants to be blessed and prays for God's grace upon their lives. Things are no different when it comes to business. The Christian entrepreneur also seeks for their business to be blessed and not cursed.
Prayers are fine and good but as the Bible notes, faith without works is ineffective. Thus, while praying can be productive, what we do, say, and think can also impact our endeavors.
For instance, God teaches in Proverbs 20:23 and elsewhere that business operators are not to cheat their customers. Similarly, a Christian entrepreneur cannot afford to cheat staff or other business partners. Doing so would violate Proverbs 11:1 where God teaches us not to deceive people.
The choice to cheat and deceive as a business tool will bring curses onto the organization and those involved in it. Similarly, a curse can fall upon a business through the name it is given. If a business is named for something that displeases God, one can not expect Him to shower it with His blessings.
The Bible makes clear that the mouth is powerful and what comes out from it can bless or curse a person's affairs. Therefore, speaking negatively about one's self and their business can bring a curse. Further, starting a business that causes others to displease the Lord is another way to bring a curse to one's business and life. There are many businesses that cause people to sin such as those that encourage and invoke lustful thoughts, sexual perversion, chemical/ substance abuse or theft. A business that causes others to idolize the business, its product or something/someone else will fall under a curse. This is because anyone who leads others astray will be punished.
Another way to deprive a business of God's blessings is to start a venture that is contrary to God's word or encourages others to sin. For instance, a business that makes wine is fine even though some customers will consume the product and sin by breaking the law to not drink and drive. However, if the vintner's advertising encourages the consumer to drink, drive drunk, and have premarital sex or commit adultery, then that is an invitation for God to remove His blessings from the business and it's owners.
In such an instance it doesn't matter how profitable the company seems, a close look will reveal dysfunction and an unhealthy work culture. It will also reveal that the owners and others pushing the sinful narrative to customers are far from happy despite their apparent business and financial advancement.
Such success is not worth it if the consequence is the removal of God's gracious hand from someone's personal life and career. Applying godly principles even in a dog-eat-dog business environment is the only way to ensure God's blessings rest upon an enterprise. That is one way that God will give the capacity to not only create wealth but do so without toil and suffering (Proverbs 10:22).
