But, can you wait? - Friday Praise & Pray (for others) June 17, 2022

Imagine a wife on the couch with her husband. A sleek car commercial comes on and she tells him she'd love him to get it for her. He says, "Sure, I'll get it for you." From time to time, the wife asks her spouse whether he'll buy her the promised car and his response is always the same, "Of course, I'll get it for you." A year goes by and the car never shows up. The couple enter, then end, the second year since the promise was made. Once again, the car never arrives.

Three years later, December arrives and she walks up to her husband in the living room. He's sprawled out on the couch with his favorite team on the screen when she tells him they need to talk. With one eye on the TV, he says, "Sure." She asks him, "Are you going to get me that car or not?" Holding back the urge to yell at a player who fumbled, he replies, "Of course, I'll get it for you." His wife says no more and having been married for long enough, he notes the silence. Alarm bells go off in his head. He turns to face her and follows up with, "Wait, what's going on? Do you think I won't get you the car I promised?"

And that, she gets angry and points out that she's been waiting for three years for the promised car. She hadn't even seen him make any efforts in that direction, which means he'd lied about his intention to buy it. He tries to interject but she cuts him off, her voice rising. Turning off the TV, he sits up to face his wife. She keeps speaking, soon mentioning all the other promises he's yet to fulfill.

Tears flow down her face and her husband rushes to take her hand. As he opens his mouth to speak, she raises a hand to silence him, saying, "I'm done. I want a divorce. You will hear from my lawyers in the morning." She spins around, walks over to the door where her handbag and a suitcase wait. He calls out to her, his voice cracking, but she flings the door open.

Waiting at her doorstep are some of their closest friends and family. Each looks uncomfortable and she realizes they heard every word she said. Just behind them is a car with a giant red bow on it. It's the very car from the commercial she asked for three years earlier. The woman blinks, turns around to look at her husband who has his head in his hands.

This story seems entertaining until I explain that the man represents God. The woman represents most of us - men and women - who are waiting on God but choose to 'break up' with Him. We struggle to trust God's word because we see no movement on the issues He's promised to handle. Thus, as time goes by, we get more and more disgruntled. We begin to doubt that God will ever show up for us. We look elsewhere for solutions - visiting tarot card readers, psychics, or plotting how to get things done outside of Him. Some opt to use our minds to 'manifest' what we desire, after all, practitioners report they get results, right?

We might not like it but, God expects those He's chosen to wait on Him. It's why Abraham waited 25 years for Isaac. David waited at least 15 years from when he was anointed to be Israel's next king till when he sat on the throne. Hannah waited years to bear Samuel. Jairus had to wait on Jesus to heal the woman with the issue of blood and several others before his daughter's issue was resolved. Even the disciples had to wait for the promised Holy Spirit to descend upon them in the Upper Room.

What are you waiting on? Don't give up on God. Don't ask for the 'divorce'. Wait another day and another and another until His word is fulfilled in your life. Have faith that He will show up for you. Rely on Him solely and don't try to take shortcuts. We are told in Hebrews 11:6 - And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Seek Him with all your heart, serving and honoring Him, and remember He is the Rewarder. Your Great Reward will surely come (Genesis 15:1)!

Join us at 12 Noon EST to seek the face of He who is the Great Reward by praising Him and praying for others. Thank You, Lord for the opportunity to wait on You (James 1:12). Thank You for telling us to walk in faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Thank You that You have promised to get us through every challenge (Deuteronomy 31:8). Amen!
